Natural Rights

While I could write a book on natural rights, and have, it is a very simple concept. Our rights do not come from government, they belong to us naturally, which is of extreme importance to anyone who believes God created nature. You are born with some degree of autonomy, implying you have a life and a personal property. As these are inherent to everyone, everyone has a right to life and their property. Murder and stealing is universally immoral.

 

If we expound upon these rights we find that the only time someone can be deprived of these things is if they've threatened the rights of another individual. Apart from that, it is immoral to infringe upon the rights of anyone regardless of ethnicity, citizenship, belief, or sex. While different parts of America haven’t always embraced this idea completely, a belief in natural rights was foundational to the American Revolution.

 

I believe conscience, privacy, property, liberty, and bearing arms are all natural rights, and regardless of what any law says, it is immoral for any one of us to attempt to deprive someone else of these rights. Doing so to an innocent person is ultimately murder, as you cannot actually stop a man from thinking, believing, and being free unless you coerce him into giving up his soul. That is why we ought to be careful with the laws we make, because who are we to play God and threaten someone for their beliefs or justly obtained property? 


Why do I make this a major issue of mine? Because it is what keeps free societies united. How many Americans would give up their guns if the 2nd Amendment were amended? How many would deny Christ if the 1st Amendment were amended? How many already comply with unconstitutional laws, knowing full well it is wrong, but act out the lie to avoid confrontation? All this is possible, and liberty will only remain if we remember the beliefs of the revolution that gave us the U.S. Constitution. “…that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
